The Leaping Stag is the "miraculous deer" of Hungarian legend.
One day, many years ago, Hunor and Magor were out hunting with a number of men. Suddenly, from a thicket, jumped a beautiful white deer and the hunters started in pursuit. Over mountain sides, across rivers, through valleys and forests, they followed the magnificent animal until they lost the trail in the darkness. The hunters were forced to camp for the night.
In the morning a glorious sight greeted their eyes. In the wild ride they had crossed the borders of their own country and had entered a country about which they had never heard, a country richly endowed with good soil, beautiful forests, fruit, game and fish.
Hunor and Magor decided that this was the land of their choice. They went back for their father's blessing and then returned with their wives to this rich new land. It is told that their descendents prospered and became the Huns and Magyors of the Hungarian nation.
The Leaping Stag of the Jamboree was to lure Scouts from many countries to the friendly Jamboree camp. 26,000 Scouts from 48 countries attended this 4th World Jamboree. Hungary was a part of the world brotherhood of Scouting until 1947, when it was banned by communist dictators. It has since been renewed after the democratic reforms beginning in 1992.
On August 1st, 1963, Greece issued a five-value set in honor of the opening of the 11th International Boy Scout Jamboree at Marathon.
Values and designs are:
- 1 drachma: "Athens at Dawn," a water color by Lord Baden Powell. The painting executed in 1872 depicts the Acropolis and surrounding area.
- 1,5 drachma: A Greek shield of the ancient Boetian type, with a badge of world Scouting in the center. It symbolizes the protection of youth from the powers of evil.
- 2,5 drachma: This is a profile of Crown Prince Constantine, Chief Scout of Greece.
- 3 drachma: Portraits of Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell and Athanassios Lefkadites, Greek gymnastics teacher, who introduced Scouting in Greece in 1910.
- 4 drachma: A Scout is bugling with a conch-shell, from a photograph taken at Marathon on the first hoisting of the Scout flag during the setting up of a trail camp for the Jamboree in 1962.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and dresses like a Scout, it might just be a Disney Scout stamp. Several Sea Scout and Junior Woodchuck stamps were issued under license from the Disney Studios. This is a portfolio of these cartoon characters on stamps.
Disney Movie Synopsis:
In The Good Scouts, a 1938 Walt Disney Studio release, Donald is leading a Scout troop- consisting of his nephews- on a hike in the woods. Donald isn't nearly the expert on the woods that he thinks he is, much to the amusement of the boys. The film earned an Academy Award nomination. Later in 1939,in Sea Scouts, Commodore Donald teaches the finer points of seamanship to his crew of nephews.
Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corp. of New York City issued and wholesaled multi-country sets of Disney stamps under license beginning in 1979, using artwork specially prepared for this purpose by Disney studio artists. This was an exclusive contract that recently was not renewed by Disney. Disney instead has shifted to limited direct licensing of their artwork for specific new issues. This will likely diminish the opportunity in the future for Disney characters to appear in Scout motif except by design. Prices for many Disney issues including these Scout designs are expected to increase.
Bhutan 1984 [Scott #468]
This stamp shows a scene from the film The Good Scouts and is in the set commemorating Donald Duck's 50th Birthday [ #460-8]. Donald is shown subjecting himself to boy's test for their first aid merit badge. A souvenir sheet [#470] depicting a scene from the 1939 movieSea Scouts is also available in this set. Stamps were issued both perforated and imperf.
Dominica 1986 [Scott #957]
This cartoon showing one of the nephews receiving his stamp collecting merit badge from his Scoutmaster, Donald Duck. Also part of the design is an image of the BSA Stamp Collecting Merit Badge. This stamp was issued in a set [Scott #954-57] commemorating AMERIPEX '86. A souvenir card is also available.
Tanzania 1992 [Scott #915]
This stamp from Mickey's Portrait Gallery [#913-24] shows old Disney portraits. Donald is shown in this scene from the movie Sea Scouts. A special seal in the upper right corner shows the character Goofy with the slogan "Goofy About Stamps."
Guyana 1993 [Scott #2769c]
This Guyana issued postage stamp pictures a Donald Duck feature poster from Sea Scouts. Donald Duck commands his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie on board a small rowboat. This stamp is part of a 50 value set depicting Donald in a Disney movie over the past 50 years. This issue is available in sheetlets of 8 or as a trading card. The reverse of the trading cards is in either French or English.
Maldives 1995 [Scott #2060f]
Maldives issued a series on Donald Duck's family portraits in honor of his 60th anniversary. This stamp pictures Huey, Dewey and Louie in their Scout campaign hats and neckerchiefs, wearing backpacks, examining a porcupine with a magnifying glass and taking this picture with a camera. This stamp is part of a set [#2051-8] also sold in an eight stamp minisheet. Another stamp from this set shows Donald Duck with a campaign hat on, but is not specifically a Junior Woodchuck design.
Gambia 1996 [Scott #1732]
This release theme was "Teaching Outdoor Skills," with one value depicting Boy Scouts as part of the set [#1729-34]. The stamp can also be found on the sheetlet of 15 stamps.

This release theme was "Disney Characters at Work." One value shows the Park Ranger warning one of Donald Duck's nephews, in his Boy Scout uniform, not to feed the bear.
The Care Bear cartoon characters were created by American Greetings in 1983. They have become a collectible similar to Beanie Babies.
Care Bears appear on greeting cards, books, movies, video, and many other items made by over 200 manufacturers. Care Bears and Care Bear Cousins are the property of Hasbro, Kenner, Those Characters from Cleveland (TCFC), and American Greetings. Postage stamps issued with Care Bear designs were licensed by World Philatelic Marketing.
The Care Bears live in a wonderful place named "Care A Lot" that is full of fluffy white clouds and colorful rainbows. This is where the sun always shines, and the skies are always blue. But Care A Lot isn't all fun. This is also where the Care Bears watch over Earth, and help keep away sadness, worries, and mean people like Professor Cold Heart, No Heart, and Dark Heart, who want to take away all of the caring in the world.
Guinea 1991 [Scott #1178G]
This souvenir sheet is one of 7 values [#1178A-G] in the "Care Bears Promoting Environmental Protection" issue by Guniea. This sheet also commemorates the XVII World Scout Jamboree held in 1991 in South Korea. The sheet design shows Environmental Share Bear next to Cub Scouts around a camp fire. A Care Bear logo with Tenderheart Bear is also included. The perforated stamp incorporates an image of Lord Baden Powell. The postage is 600 francs, and indicates it is for air transport.
What is the story behind a stamp? The 1962 Austria (Scott#684) is a particularly nice engraved stamp showing a Scout handshake. Of course it honors the 50th anniversary of Austrian Scouting and the first day of issue, October 5, 1962, coincided with the First International Scout Postage Stamp Exhibition in Vienna. Aside from some details of issuing and the design by Adalbert Pilch, what more is there to say?
Two years ago while I was hosting three visiting Austrian Scouters the conversation turned to one of my favorite subjects, stamps. While politely looking at my collection the Austrians spied the first day cover from their country. "Do you know the story of this handshake?" they asked. They pointed out what I had never seen, the hand on the right was shaking with two fingers while the one on the left used three.
They went on to explain the significance of the handshake. From 1938 to 1946, during the Nazi period, Scouting was banned in Austria. However, it didn't go away, but went underground. Of course the uniform was not allowed and other displays of Scouting such as the Scout sign and salute would instantly be recognized by soldiers or police. The two and three fingered left handshake was adopted as a subtle recognition signal. In honor of those brave Scouts this handshake was continued after the war.
There was another Scout recognition. On the first day cover the 1912 Scout has his shirt sleeve lose in the normal fashion while the 1962 Scout has his rolled under. While Scout uniforms couldn't be worn in public, this was a symbol that could be passively displayed and seen from a distance. It too was adopted by the Austrian Scouts after they returned to World Scouting in 1946.

"WORLD SCOUT MOVEMENT" (1) St. George - The Scouts Patron Saint
[An introduction and a sample from the material contained in the exhibit are shown here] Introduction Scouting is about participating with friends, as a team, in the adventure and opportunities of life. Scouts are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities and both the traditional Scouting skills (such as camping, survival and cooking) as well as a wide range of adventures (anything from abseiling to yachting) are part of their programme. That helps them find out about the world in which they live, know better their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit, as well as to explore their values and personal attitudes and develop their creative talents in order to achieve such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness. In 1907, Lieut. General Baden-Powell was encouraged to re-write his book “Aids to Scouting” (published in 1899 for NCO’s and Men), so that it would appeal to boys. But before doing so he planned out the idea and then tested it with the help of some twenty boys of all sorts in a camp at Brownsea Island, where they lived together for a fortnight. A year later (1908) he wrote “Scouting for Boys” intending it to be useful to the then existing boys' organisations. But, from those boys who reading the book (as it came out in fortnightly parts) had taken up the game for themselves, the World Scout Movement was born. THE SCOUTS PATRON SAINT St. George is the Patron Saint of Boy Scouts everywhere in the World THE ORIGINS OF SCOUTING The Siege of Mafeking (1900) during the Boer War in South Africa gave birth to the Idea of Scouting. As the town run out of stamps, two new values (1p and 3p) were printed with the cyanotype photography process. The first showed the portrait of Colonel Baden-Powell, defender of the city and later (1907) Founder of the Scout Movement. The first print measured 18,5 mm, but was followed by a 21 mm one. [View: "The Mafeking Blues 1900"] BADEN-POWELL THE FOUNDER AND HIS LEGACY Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell (1857-1941), Sir Robert since 1922 and Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell since 1929, was acclaimed as Chief Scout of the World in 1920. World Scout Movement’s Golden Jubilee (1957) coincided with the 100th anniversary of his birth. These celebrations gave the opportunity for the issue of a number of postage stamps depicting him in a variety of pictures. Painted by David Jagger in 1929, his official scout portrait was presented to him during the III World Jamboree at Arrow Park, Birkenhead in England. Scouting is based in three broad Principles: Duty to God, Duty to Other and Duty to Self. These Principles are defined in the Scout Promise and the Scout Law. Together with their Law and Promise, Boy Scouts recognize themselves through their insignias, salute, handshake, uniform and activities. 1918 CZECH SCOUT POST The Sea Scouts of Prague (Nov. 7-25, 1918) provided postal service for the National Committee of Liberation of their country. Two values (10h and 20h) were issued. They are the first scouts on stamps following the foundation of Scouting. To support Scouting in his country, King Rama VI of Siam let 19 stamps of earlier issues (1906-1920) be overprinted by three types of overprint (I, II and III). Scouts are allowed to wear distinctive badges awarded to them in recognition of their physical, mental and spiritual development that lead to the discovery and improvement of their skills and abilities. Scouting is divided in Sections of age and field of activities. Its main Sections are Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts (age definition) and Sea and Air Scouts (activity definition). Among the normal activities of a Boy Scout are orienteering, hiking, camping, cooking, sporting, communicating, constructing and serving the community. A campfire usually concludes his camp activities. Hungary has the honor of being the first country to picture a Boy Scout on a postage stamp. Romania has the honor of being the first country to issue a set of stamps picturing scout activities and to commemorate a Scout Jamboree on a postage stamp (National Jamboree at Sibiu). Scout Jamborees are regular get-together between scouts at national, regional or world levels. The first World Scout Jamboree took place in London, England U.K. (1920). The World Scout Conference is the "General Assembly" of Scouting. The Girl Guides Movement was founded by Baden-Powell in 1910, just three years after he officially introduced Scouting in his country. At the beginning he was helped by his sister Agnes Baden-Powell (1858-1945), who became the first President of the Movement. In 1912 he met his future wife, Olave St.Claire Soames (1889-1977), who soon became actively involved in the Guide and Scout Movements and was appointed Chief Commissioner in 1916, Chief Guide in 1918 and World Chief Guide in 1930. Hungary has the honor of issuing the first ever Girl Guides series of stamps (1939). Boy Scouts and Girl Guides overprints commemorating the 20th anniversary of Scouting in Lithuania and the National Jamboree at Penemune. Comprises the first ever Girl Guides overprint. Several personalities received Scouting and later Guiding under their patronage since early years and some of them had active service within. World Jamboree 1920 - 1999 Covers and Postcards for sale The 1920 World Jamboree As we all know the first world jamboree took place in London England, in the exhibition halls of Olympia. An 20 cm. thick layer of earth and peat covered the floors for tents to be pitched.
Unfortunately, the (probably) parents of the scout cut out the stamps of the cover, later on the stamps were reunited with the cover. So far this is the only cover with known with the Old Deer Park cachet on it, all other cachets known are set on postcards. The Jamboree postoffice was situated in a tent at the Old Deer Park Jamboree camp. Mail sent from this camp usually received a postmark from Richmond Surrey. A clear print of the Richmond cancel is shown on the above card, sent to Norway, on August the 4th. at 4.15 pm. The Jamboree cachet was set on the picture side of the postcard, showing the Tower of London from the river. The USA contingent left well prepared, all scouts were given a postcard of the ship they sailed on, the s.s. Pocohontas, to sent home, just before departure, july the 6th. 1920. The card has a cancel from the Military Postoffice at Hoboken N.Y. A pre printed postal card was sent to sponsors of the Jamboree party, telling them that the 301 scouts and 57 leadershave sailed at one o'clock on July the 6th. 1920. It was signed by James E. West, chief scout executive. The postal cards were canceled, Madison SQ. Station July 6th 1920 The Jamboree party Landed in Southampton, a message was wired back to the States and a postcard with the 'Old wall at Southampton' was sent to parents and friends of the Jamboree Scouts. At the back was the message Safe in Southampton, happy and well, will write regularly. Your Jamboree Scout. The cards were sent from Madison SQ. Station, July 20, 1920 at 11 am. The USA Jamboree Delegation used special envelopes for messages home. This one was addressed to Mr. Edwin Eberman, Roxboro, North Carolina. Sent from London N.D.C. July 20, 1920 at 11.15 am. only days after they had arrived in Southampton.

Less known is the fact that most of the scouts (at peak days about 5.000) stayed at a special Jamboree camp at old deer park camp in Richmond, Surrey, not far from the Olympia Halls in London.
The above letter was sent from the Jamboree camp at Old Deer Park on August the 2nd. It was sent with one of the first, airmail flights to Holland and arrived on the Island of Terschelling on August the 4th. On the back is a very clear print of the Jamboree cachet and a jamboree label.
